Spray Painting Surfboards

Surfboard owners are usually very passionate about their hobby. For a select few, it has become even more than a hobby. It has become a sport. So how can you spray paint your surfboard so that it becomes a piece of art that your friends will be envious of?

First, make sure you have the correct materials and tools. All you really need is spray paint, masking tape, a cutting knife, and a can of clear sealant, and masking tape (low tack) Before you begin painting, you will want to clean your surfboard thoroughly. Make sure all of the wax and grease is removed.

The next step is to plan out your design. Take your time and try to come up with something original.

Next cut your chosen design. Tape your surfboard across the entire board. It is recommended that you overlap the tape onto itself. By doing that, it will help keep other parts of the surfboard from getting paint on it. After you have decided on the design, draw it onto your surfboard. Then cut out the design with your knife.

The next step is to actually paint your surfboard. Make sure your cover up parts of the board that you do not want to paint. That is very important. If you use a very light coat of paint, you can even spray over the tape. It is recommended that you let one color dry before moving on to the next one. Most experienced spray painters will also recommend keeping about 12 inches between the surfboard and the spray gun.
After you have finished painting and you have removed the extra paint, you will want to apply a clear coat. This will help protect your design from cracking and peeling off.

These are the basic steps for spray painting a surfboard. With a little practice, you will be able to spray paint a design that you friends will be jealous of.
